Dancing Bears • Yiddish Poet T-Shirt

This T-shirt celebrates the worlds of Litvak Poet Laureate Meyshe Kulbak. The bears featured on the city crests of Smorgon, Belarus (Kulbak’s hometown and site of a famous bear-training academy) and Berlin, Germany (where Kulbak spent a formative period of his career) dance together. The text comes from “Asore Dibraye,” a Kulbak poem about a Litvak bear-trainer:

My Grandpa once had some cousin or uncle,
A trainer of bears for shows in the big fairs,
By day he would sit and forge chains for his brown bear,
And at night they would dance as the night stars would twinkle.
